All About Shaker Cabinets

Shaker cabinets have been in use for over a century, and the furniture maker has made countless changes to them over the years. They have been designed to withstand the test of time and the changing demands of their owners.

Grey Shaker Cabinets was first manufactured in New England, and the style has been replicated in many other regions of the United States, and even in other countries around the world. The original homes of the Shakers built their homes out of hickory and oak, but the wood was far from ideal for cabinets.

Eventually, the supply of oak and hickory gave way to cheaper, more versatile, and more essential components. Today, we take the design and functionality of these cabinets for granted, and they can be found in most every room in your home.

A unique feature of the Shaker cabinet is the shelf on top. There are various types of wood used to construct them, but the general rule is the bigger the piece, the stronger it will be. They tend to be carved with a drawer front, or set up as an island that contains two or three drawers.

You can find Shaker cabinet in a variety of wood finishes, including hardwood, laminate, and particleboard. These woods offer a very natural look, and in some cases you may be able to find stained furniture.

The gray Shaker cabinets were produced between the early 1900s and 1970. The furniture maker did away with the wood veneer of the country whites and gave the cabinet a natural look with solid oak and hickory floors. The most notable types of woods used were Oak and Maple.

Pieces that are manufactured today often feature an additional piece of hardware to hold down the piece and to match the design of the door. In some cases you may find that pieces will have a freestanding door on the top of the cabinet, but the majority of them have a drawer-mounted door.

The simplest Shaker cabinet, the rail, uses only one piece of wood for the top of the cabinet, and no hardware. This style is ideal for a guest room, as the top is concealed behind the curtain or wallpaper of the room. The final type of Shaker cabinet is the island, which contains four or five drawers and a door on top.

Furniture made by the Shakers is usually quite large, and unlike most other furnishings, this style is usually hand crafted. It is not uncommon to find pieces in this style on sale at a yard sale, or a pawn shop, or at a second-hand store.

The furniture is available in a number of modern designs, and you can also find many reproductions of these pieces on the market. It is an exciting project to restore these pieces, and you can spend hours admiring them.

You should be aware that when you purchase furniture pieces from the Shakers, you are not purchasing a modern piece, but something with historical value. These pieces are stunning and require some restoration work to bring them back to their original glory.

If you are looking for something more up-to-date and modern, you will be happy to know that you can find that, too. Most of the wood used to construct modern furnishings is synthetic and is much stronger and more durable than the older woods.
